Real independence.
The myth
The ‘one-stop sho'p’ is often a myth even inside large firms. The client may think they are getting integrated advice from one firm. In reality, they can be getting advice from separate departments with separate P&Ls, separate partners, separate billing targets and no structural incentive to coordinate.
The tax partner may not know what the immigration partner advised. The reward team may not have seen the tax analysis. The client receives separate deliverables and is left to reconcile them.
The one-stop-shop brand can create the illusion of integration without the reality of it.
The structural conflict
When a tax partner in a large firm refers a client to their firm’s immigration practice, that referral can generate internal revenue. The partner may have a financial incentive to refer internally regardless of whether the internal team is the best option for that client.
This is a structural conflict. It is not typically solved by good intentions or internal quality processes.
It is solved by independence.
The evidence from wealth management
The family office model emerged precisely because high-net-worth clients discovered that single-brand wealth managers — even the most prestigious ones — could not always provide genuinely integrated, conflict-free advice.
The growth of the multi-family office and outsourced family office sectors is because sophisticated clients often prefer curated independence over captive integration.
Best-in-class vs best-in-firm
A single firm can be excellent at one thing and less strong at another.
The Fenton International Private Advisory Office model gives our clients the best specialist in each domain — not the best available within one firm’s headcount.
‘One throat to choke’
Clients who say they want a one-stop shop usually mean they want one person to call. They want accountability, not a brand.
Fenton International gives them exactly that — one senior adviser who owns the outcome — with better specialist delivery behind it.
Fenton International provides the reality of integration without the illusion of a single brand.
